What's the difference between playing a melody and playing a melody along with the backing track?

When we play by ourselves, we trust our inner rhythm to keep time. However, most of the time, we end up speeding up when the melody is simple and slowing down when things are challenging.

Most of the time, we are not aware we do it!

When you play along with a backing track, though, you are forced to follow a steady and constant rhythm. Since the backing track doesn't follow your speed changes, it forces you to play in time.
