Quickly Learn Fingerstyle Guitar in 7 Simple Steps
(While playing beautiful chords and melodies...)
I Have A Question for You
Why do so many guitar newbies think that fingerpicking guitar is difficult?
In many years as a guitar teacher, I came across hundreds of students who never wanted to learn fingerstyle guitar.
Not because they didn't like it! (Most of them loved the idea).
But because they thought it was too difficult.
I heard it so many times! "Oh, I love fingerstyle, but
✓ I am not sure I can learn it.
✓ I will learn it when I am not a beginner anymore.
✓ I don't know where to start.
✓ I tried a few times, but I was overwhelmed.
WHAT'S FINGERSTYLE GUITAR...
What Exactly is The Difference Between Playing Guitar and Playing Fingerstyle Guitar?
With the fingerstyle technique, we pluck the strings with the right-hand fingers. This way of playing gives you a lot of control over chords, melodies, and rhythm.
Then why many beginners think that it's too difficult?
First of all, most beginners start with the strumming technique, which looks easier than fingerstyle.
The strumming technique is effortless and intuitive. It allows you to play chords and songs easily.
You strum the strings either up or down while holding a chord. It's such an immediate technique!
It works great for beginners, and every guitar player uses it!
HOW ABOUT FINGERSTYLE?
With the fingerstyle technique, you pluck the strings with the thumb, index, middle, and ring finger.
Each finger combination is called a "Fingerstyle pattern" or "Fingerpicking pattern."
The first legit question that every beginner has is, "Which finger should I use to pluck the strings?"
With the strumming technique, you brush the strings with downstrokes and upstrokes (Easy right!).
On the other hand, a fingerstyle pattern can have many variations.
✔ PATTERN N.1 Thumb - index - middle - ring
✔ PATTERN N.2 Thumb - middle - index - ring
✔ PATTERN N.3 Thumb - ring - middle - index
STRUMMING VS. FINGERSTYLE
STRUMMING
- 1. Simple and intuitive
- Just two movements: Downstroke and Upstroke
- Mainly a rhythmic technique
FINGERSTYLE
- It takes a moment to figure it out
- Each fingerstyle pattern has multiple variations
- Can be rhythmic and melodic
From what you are saying, Marco, it looks like the fingerstyle technique is indeed challenging and probably not suitable for beginners.
I am out of here!
WHAT IF I TELL THAT FINGERSTYLE
- IS NOT AS DIFFICULT AS IT SOUNDS. Thousands of people start playing guitar using the fingerpicking technique!
- IT WORKS GREAT FOR BEGINNERS. You have to start in the right way!
- IT CAN GO ALONGSIDE WITH STRUMMING. You can combine both techniques and diversify your playing!
AND WHAT IF I TELL THAT FINGERSTYLE ALLOWS YOU TO
- MAKE CHORDS SIMPLE. The fingerstyle technique gives you access to simpler chord shapes.
- PLAY MELODIES EASILY. With the fingerstyle technique, it's easy to isolate the notes of a melody.
- COMBINE CHORDS AND MELODIES. Create beautiful sounding arrangements with the least amount of effort.
AND WHAT IF YOU COULD
- STOP THINKING ABOUT HOW DIFFICULT. And focus on how beautiful it could be to learn this technique.
- LEARN FINGERSTYLE TEP-BY-STEP. Start playing with the most simple fingerpicking patterns (JUST TWO FINGERS!)
- PROVE TO YOURSELF THAT YOU CAN DO IT. And feel awesome and proud of yourself.
THIS IS WHAT FINGERSTYLE SOUNDS LIKE
YOU MAKE IT SOUND TOO EASY, MARCO!
AFTER ALL, YOU HAVE BEEN PLAYING FOR YEARS!
Did I always love playing guitar?
Let me be honest with you guys!
I didn't!
I hated it. But not because I didn't like it ...
I started playing guitar when I was a little kid. My first instrument was a classical guitar, which I learned with a classical guitar teacher.
Back then, I didn't know you could play songs or nice melodies, and for me, it was all about following what my teacher would teach me every week.
I was about 10 years old.
My teacher told me that if I wanted to become a good guitar player, I had to develop an impeccable technique.
I spent my first few months playing scales, arpeggios, and classical exercises.
Great for me, right? Not really!
I am surprised I actually didn't give up at some point.
I never played a song.
I never played a melody.
It was the most boring and frustrating thing I had to do as a kid, and because I hated it, all the exercises I practiced didn't improve my guitar playing at all!
Not even a bit!
The reason why I am sharing my story with you guys is because I want you to realize one thing:
Learning guitar can be challenging at first.
We all struggle at some point, and it can be hard to find the motivation and inspiration to keep going.
Now tell me if this sounds like you:
✓ You get excited when you see someone playing something cool on the guitar, and you think, "Wow, I want to learn that!"
✓ You also get excited when you know it's time to practice and play your guitar! FINALLY!
✓ You bought your first guitar, and you couldn't wait to learn your very first chord.
✓ You learned a few chords, and boys, if it was challenging (but you love it!
✓ You always try to find time to play. You are busy working, but that doesn't stop you.
✓ You learned chords and songs that you wanted to play. Yeah!
✓ You love YouTube because it's full of great guys who teach you guitar stuff!
✓ You learned a few songs quickly, and you figured, "At this pace, I will be learning many songs this year.
But then these creepy thoughts start kicking in:
✘ You start feeling less excited when you see someone playing. There is a weird voice in your head saying, "Whatever, I will probably never be able to play that."
✘ You also don't feel that excited about practicing and playing the guitar.
✘ The chords that once you loved playing are now boring. After all, they never change!
✘ The practicing slot that was sacred is now used to do other things (you are not practicing anymore).
✘ You try to learn new songs, but they are either too complex or can only learn the simple sections (You are never able to finish the whole song).
✘ YouTube is no longer fun. Too many lessons and diverse opinions on how you should learn.
✘Maybe you are not a beginner, but you feel you have been playing the same stuff for the last 25 years, so you gave up!
SOMEHOW YOU LOST YOUR PASSION, MOTIVATION AND YOU FEEL YOU ARE STUCK IN A GUITAR RUT!
WHY DID YOU LOSE PASSION FOR GUITAR?
MAYBE BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT
- My hands are too small. My fingers are not cut out for guitar.
- Let's face it! I have no talent for music!
- My guitar is a piece of garbage. It makes everything more challenging.
- I am not practicing enough! Honestly, I get bored quickly!
- I want to play the songs I love, but they are too difficult for me.
BUT WHAT IF YOU THINK THAT INSTEAD
- My hands are too small. My fingers are not cut out for guitar, SO MAYBE I SHOULD LEARN A WAY TO MAKE CHORDS EASIER TO PLAY.
- Let's face it! I have no talent for music SO I AM GONNA ASK A GUITAR TEACHER TO HELP ME.
- My guitar is a piece of garbage. It makes everything more challenging MAYBE I SHOULD TRY A BETTER SET UP. LET'S START BY USING LIGHTER STRINGS!
- I am not practicing enough! Honestly, I get bored quickly SO MAYBE I SHOULD DIVERSIFY MY PRACTICE ROUTINE.
- I want to learn the songs I love but they are too difficult for me MAYBE I SHOULD PRACTICE SONG-LIKE EXERCISES SO I CAN DEVELOP THE TECHNIQUE I NEED TO PLAY THE SONGS I LOVE.
"EASY FOR YOU, MATE! YOU'VE BEEN PLAYING FOR YEARS!
